The 16 Best WordPress Plugins To Use In 2012

WordPress plugins abound and some are extremely useful and some of course are useless. I find these types of lists to be interesting , and they at least make you aware off plugins you may not have known about. However, as always, take any list like this with a grain of salt, and check any plugin out thoroughly before using it.

More convenient for you to use wordpress, many volunteers have developed many excellent free plugins. I use them in my work, they do make my job a lot easier, thanks to these volunteers. Now let me introduce these excellent plugins to you.

This list is the 16 most incredible WordPress plugins. Only the 16 best WordPress plugins have made it while anything less than amazing has been kicked to the street.

Each of these WordPress plugins are used at Site Sketch 101 and I personally recommend each of them to you. The following plugins are posted in the order that I recommend them.

1. W3 Total Cache – This WordPress plugin is great for two reasons. First, it makes your pages load way faster. Second, since it stores static versions of your site, it requires much less CPU processing than using WordPress all by itself. This WordPress plugin is number one on the list for the reason.

2. HeadSpace -?WordPress SEO Made Simple-Move over All in one SEO. There’s a new guy in town. HeadSpace provides you with the features you need to drive your site to the top. People spend too much time working on SEO and too little time writing great content. This plugin let’s you put your focus back where it belongs. It takes care of all the SEO work that your blog will need.

3. Gravity Forms – This is without question the best WordPress plugin for forms. There is no competition. This form creates posts, allows image and media uploads, allows conditional logic, and so much more. It is the all-in-one form plugin for WordPress.

4. MaxBlog Press Affiliate Ninja – This WordPress plugin is amazing as it massively cuts down on the amount of time it takes to promote affiliate products throughout your site. It converts keywords that you identify, tracks clicks, and much more. You won’t have to keep chasing down your affiliate links when they’re all stored in your WordPress dashboard and doing the work for you.

5. WP-DBManager – This little gem is amazing for backing up your website. It actually has quite a few functions that it can perform, but perhaps it’s most impressive feature is it’s ability to email the entire WordPress databse to me every day.

6. Thank Me Later – This plugin is great. It sends an email to all first-time visitors. You can write up the email to remind them about your RSS feed or just to invite them to connect with you personally. I do both.

7. WP-PageNavi – Those ‘Older Posts’ and ‘Newer Posts’ links are boring. With WP-PaveNavi you can get page buttons so users can go directly to whichever page they want. Plus they look a lot better than plain little links.

8. SEO Smart Links – Do you inter-link your articles? You should. Linking within an article to other articles is a great way to build Page Rank throughout your site and it’s a great way to get readers to find your other articles on similar subjects. This plugin will interlink keywords to your other articles for you.

9. Digg Digg Social Sharing – This simply WordPress plugin is what powers the floating social icons to the left of each post here at Site Sketch 101. With an easy to access Twitter icon, your friends and readers will be able to easily share and promote your content.

10. Feedburner Circulation – The era of the feedburner chicklets are over. Install the Feedburner Circulation WordPress plugin and you’ll be able to display your subscriber count.

11. Revision Control – With the revisions feature of WordPress, it doesn’t take long for your database to get bloated and begin slowing down your site. With the Revision Control WordPress Plugin you can limit the number of post revisions that remain in storage. I have mine set to 2.

12. Tweet Old Post – If you’ve been engaging and building a community of friends on Twitter, then this WordPress plugin is the perfect way to sprinkle your posts into your tweets. It has options to add hashtags, leading text and more.

WordPress SEO URL / Permalinks considerations

Let’s answer some of the questions that continually pop up: what does the optimal WordPress SEO URL / Permalink structure look like? How should you use your URL’s, what should and shouldn’t you do with them. A lot of questions below, a lot of answers, most with a reference to a video or post from Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s web spam team.

The perfect WordPress SEO URL structure

I’ll be honest. I think it’s dead simple and that you basically have two options. The URL should end with the post name and could possibly be prefixed with the category. No other options really make sense.

This means you’d end up with a permalink structure as follows:

/%postname%/

or, with the category:

/%category%/%postname%/

Putting the date in the URL has very few benefits, if any. I’m not a fan because it “dates” your older results, possibly getting a lower click through over time. The reason the postname has to be in there is probably obvious, but still: it would mean you get another mention of the main keyword in your URL. This is also why my WordPress SEO plugin’s Page Analysis feature checks for this (example below).

Should I use the category in my permalink structure?

If your domain name is short and your category names are short and descriptive, there can be a pretty big benefit in having the category in the URL. You should take care though; if your slug (the part of the URL that identifies the post) is long and you have the category in the URL as well, that might potentially lead to a very long URL which is harder to share and won’t benefit you as much in Google.

If you decide to use the category in the permalink, make sure to pick short and descriptive slugs for your categories, and to preferably pick only one category for each post. You might take some info from this video from Matt Cutts as well:

Should I add .html to my permalink structure?

I don’t believe for one moment that this would help you, even though this seems to be a long standing myth, neither would .php or other extensions. But… some people feel otherwise. Watch the video below, where Matt says that it has no effect on core ranking in the end but it “might” on other things, which leads some people to think it’s beneficial:

I’ve emailed Matt to see if I can get some more info out of him. Some other extensions though, might in fact hurt you, Matt has warned in the past about not using .exe in your URL’s, for instance.

Update: I emailed Matt and asked whether it makes sense to add .html for systems like WordPress. His response:

In general I wouldn’t. My WP has urls like http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/remove-result/ and that’s pretty ideal.

So. Case closed.

My blog is in Google News, don’t I need numbers in the URL?

In the past, Google News required you to have a unique number in the URL to be indexed. This is still true unless you have a Google News XML Sitemap, as you can see in the Google docs. The Google News module for my WordPress SEO plugin provides you with such an XML sitemap and there are a couple of other plugins that can do that for you, so you no longer need those numbers in there.

Should my focus keyword always be the first keyword in the URL?

It might help a tiny bit, but getting it in there is way more important than having it in the first few. Matt did a video on this too:

How many words should I use in my slug?

For a perfect WordPress SEO URL, your slug should be no longer than 3 to 5 words. From this interview with Matt Cutts:

If you can make your title four- or five-words long – and it is pretty natural. If you have got a three, four or five words in your URL, that can be perfectly normal. As it gets a little longer, then it starts to look a little worse. Now, our algorithms typically will just weight those words less and just not give you as much credit.

Should you change your URL structure for better SEO?

After saying that this is the best approach for your SEO, you might expect me to say that you should even change your URL structure for this benefit. While I might change it if it’s an “old style” URL structure like ?p= (and thus are not having the SEO benefits of the keyword in your URLs), if you’re currently using the date in the URL, changing it is not always a good idea. It really depends on how long you’ve been blogging under that URL structure and how competitive the market you’re in is. In quite a few cases, I’d do a lot of other things first before changing the Permalink structure, even when you’re not sporting the perfect WordPress SEO URL settings.

If you’re on Apache and you decide to do the redirect, having been on a /yyyy/mm/dd/%postname%/ structure before, you might benefit from this simple redirect which you could throw into your .htaccess file:

RedirectMatch 301 /\d{4}/\d{2}/\d{2}/(.*) http://example.com/$1

Performance issues with this WordPress SEO URL structure

As the codex states, there are some performance issues with this permalink structure. Performance would be better when the URL structure contained the post ID, or started with a static thing such as /posts/%postname%/. To be honest, I couldn’t care less. If you’re not willing to invest in WordPress hosting a bit, you might as well not optimize for search. Next to that, the detrimental performance effect of a perfect WordPress SEO url setting is mostly gone when you install a proper caching plugin.

Conclusion: the perfect WordPress SEO URL

It really depends on your site what the perfect WordPress SEO URL looks like, but they don’t differ often. It helps if you make these considerations up front, but you can always make them later too, just be sure to do proper redirects from your old to your new structure.

How to create your own WordPress functionality plugin

A common, yet unfortunate practice in the WordPress community involves filling theme functions.php files with tweaks and functionality that is key to a site. The reason this is a bad idea, in short, is that it will tie your critical site functionality to a theme that will eventually change. Good news, though: there is a much better, smarter alternative. It’s called a functionality plugin.

We’re going to create a very simple, very specific functionality plugin that you can (hopefully) use to replace your theme’s functions.php file. After all, the poor guy deserves a break, doesn’t he?

What (and why) is a functionality plugin?

First of all, the thing to realize with plugins is that, for all intents and purposes, they behave no differently than your theme’s functions.php file. I won’t say there are no differences, of course, but a plugin file should not be treated as something foreign and strange. If you’ve edited your functions.php file — even if you’ve just edited it by dropping in PHP that you found searching online — then you are familiar enough to manage your own plugins.

You can think of it as a portable functions.php file that you can take with you when you change themes.

Having said that, when I refer to a functionality plugin, I’m talking about a certain type of plugin intended to belong to a specific website. You can think of it as a portable functions.php file that you can take with you when you change themes.

Functionality plugins should contain all of the code that is important for the necessary structure and functionality of your website. By creating a plugin specifically for your website you have the ability of taking the most important parts of your site with you from theme to theme.

Let’s look at a couple of examples. One common thing often added to functions.php files is a register_taxonomy function. This sort of function will create a custom taxonomy (like categories or tags, but defined by you) to allow you to organize your content further. This is what it would look like:

function people_init() { register_taxonomy( 'people', 'post', array( 'label' => __('People'), 'sort' => true, 'args' => array('orderby' => 'term_order'), 'rewrite' => array('slug' => 'profiles'), ) ); }add_action( 'init', 'people_init' );

If we include this in our WordPress theme’s functions.php file we may run into a surprise when (not if) we change our theme in the future and don’t see our custom taxonomy on the Dashboard anymore. In order to maintain our taxonomy we would have to scour the functions.php file before the theme change to make sure we didn’t miss anything important.

Or, and this is what I recommend, we could create a plugin named after our site and put the function in there. Then we can change themes freely, knowing that our most important, core functionality is preserved safely in a plugin. I call these special types of plugins functionality plugins.

What belongs in a functionality plugin?

To decide what belongs in a functions.php file and what belongs in a functionality plugin, think long term. Rather than thinking about how your website will look and behave this week, think about how it will look and behave five years from now. With few exceptions, I bet all of our sites will have new and upgraded themes in five years’ time.

For every item we might instinctively want to add to our functions.php file, we should stop and consider whether our site will depend on that functionality in five years or not. Consider the following list of functions, for example:

register_post_type() and register_taxonomy(), for creating a custom content type and related taxonomy.
add_shortcode(), to create a shortcode for publishing certain kinds of content more easily.
add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ) and add_image_size(), to enable post thumbnails and set a certain size.

Let’s take the first example, register_post_type() and register_taxonomy(). In five years will you still want these types of content available to you on the Dashboard and on your site? Of course you will, that’s your site’s content! Your content and how you can access it shouldn’t be determined by the particular theme you’ve chosen. These, and others like it, should be included in a functionality plugin, not your functions.php file.

In the second example, add_shortcode(), we’re adding a way to drop in potentially complex code into our content. There’s a rule of thumb I have for determining what belongs in a plugin: if it modifies or interacts with content it belongs in a plugin. In this case we’re quite literally creating content, and if this function is missing our content will display in the raw shortcode format. In this case as well, it belongs in a functionality plugin.

Finally, the third item add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ) and add_image_size() add a post thumbnail and particular size to your site. This is one case that I would say is debatable, since post thumbnails, and in particular sizes, may depend largely on the particular display of your site. In my own case I define post thumbnails in a plugin, but I could see the argument for including them in theme files instead. So, in this case: it depends.

What belongs in functions.php?

Your theme’s functions.php file is for any functions or declarations that are necessary for your theme’s appearance. As long as what you’ve added there don’t effect your content in any way, you should be just fine.

There are a number of examples of functions best kept in your theme’s functions.php file:

registern_nav_menus()
register_sidebar()
wp_enqueue_script() and wp_enqueue_style()

The register_nav_menus() is appropriately placed in a theme’s functions.php file, since the placement of the navigation menus themselves depend on the given theme you are using. Keeping this function in a plugin would give you menu placement options on the Dashboard that wouldn’t actually display anywhere in your theme.

register_sidebar() should also stay in your functions.php file, since once again registering sidebars in a plugin could mean you have active plugins on the Dashboard that don’t actually show up anywhere on your site. That would be pretty silly.

wp_enqueue_script() and wp_enqueue_style() are both similar, and I would say depend on the situation. If you are creating a child theme they belong in functions.php. If you are adding them for another purpose (modifying the WordPress admin bar, for instance) then a plugin would likely be more appropriate. As in our earlier examples, this third example requires a bit of context to be sure whether it belongs in functions.php or a plugin.

How to create your first functionality plugin

Creating a functionality plugin is easy, particularly if you understand it as an extension of your functions.php file. You’ll want to start with a plugin file with the appropriate comment header, like this:

/* Plugin Name: Your Site's Functionality Plugin Description: All of the important functionality of your site belongs in this. Version: 0.1 License: GPL Author: Your Name Author URI: yoururl */

Save that as a PHP file within its own folder in your site’s plugin directory. I would also recommend maintaining a basic readme.txt file for your own sake. Trust me, you-in-five-years will thank you for starting it today. Document the changes you make to your functionality plugin, as well as what everything does.

Now head to your WordPress plugins page and activate your plugin. Congrats, you just activated your own plugin: your own comment-only, functionally empty plugin, but your own plugin nonetheless! It won’t do anything, but the nice part now is that you have a file on your site, a plugin file, that will behave much like you’re used to functions.php behaving. And instead of abusing your functions.php file with code you will need later on, you can use your new functionality plugin.

What goes in our plugin?

Now comes the fun part, where we move over site-vital functions to our plugin. To briefly recap, we’re interested in moving functions that are vital to our site’s operation stuff we will want around when (not if) we change our theme in the future.

Everyone’s functions.php file will be slightly different, as well as what will count as “vital site functionality”. But here’s a table with a handful of functions I’ve seen floating around, and where I think they belong:

There are plenty of other examples I could use here (actually, limitless examples) but these should be enough to deliver my point.

Your future creating plugins

Sometimes even the functionality plugin may not provide as much universality as we want. Sometimes it may be better to create our own plugins to create unique functionality in each one. If you’re anything like me, functionality plugins like this will be your first foray into WordPress plugin development. I’m much closer to the beginner side of the spectrum than I am the expert side, but what I’ve learned the past 6 months or so has been driven in large part by working in plugins rather than functions.php.

Next time you are copying and pasting a function from a website, or perhaps you managed to piece together code doing just what you need for your purposes, consider abstracting it, writing yourself some solid documentation on what it does, and turning it into a plugin of its own. Likely this won’t require anything more than moving that function into a plugin file with the appropriate commented header (seen above). By doing this you will have tiny portable pieces of functionality you can enable on sites whenever you need them.

I, for instance, created a few super simple plugins just this month:

Admin Bar Hover Intent: This one I’m proud of, because I actually released it into the wild on the plugin directory (something I’ve only done once before). It simply implements jQuery hoverIntent on the dropdowns, requiring a deliberate pause over them before they drop down.
Admin Bar Cleanup: Sometimes I create plugins that tweak things to operate just the way I like them. In this case, Admin Bar Cleanup just hides the WordPress search bar from the admin bar for me. I don’t use it on every website of mine, but on a few it’s definitely active.
Login Redirect Home: This plugin simply, when active, redirects all login activity back to the home page. I use this one sparingly: only on team P2 blogs, team wikis, and task tracking sites.

Not long ago I would have just added it to my site’s functionality plugin (or worse the functions.php file) and moved on, only to likely re-do the same work later in another project.

But each of these plugins requires less than twenty lines of code. All I did was stop myself from adding functionality to only my own site, and stepped back to consider the usefulness of the functions outside of the current project. If there was use for it, I whipped up a quick plugin file and dropped the code in.

15 useful WordPress Functions you probably don’t know

While I was building my first premium WordPress Plugin – the Avia Feedback Box – I needed to solve quite a few problems I have never encounterd when creating themes. During my research I stumbled upon several really cool wordpress functions that I want to share with you.

WordPress Transient API

set_transient(), get_transient(), delete_transient()

This is a function set very similar to get_options() and update_options() which helps to easily store and retrieve data in your options database table. The big difference here is that you also pass a time parameter which acts as expiration date for the database entry.

Once the time has expired the data is removed. This is especially useful if you want to cache data or query results for a short amount of time. An example would be a twitter widget which retrieves data from the twitter api, but since twitter is down pretty often it would be wise to save that data for a few minutes. That also would speed up the site for subsqequent page requests since you don’t need to connect to an external API.

It works pretty easy: the function set_transient accepts 3 parameters:

set_transient($transient, $value, $expiration);

so saving a value to your database for an hour would look like this:

set_transient('the_name', $special_query_results, 60*60);

getting the value like this:

$value = get_transient('the_name');

WordPress “Cron Jobs”

wp_schedule_event(time(), 'hourly', 'my_schedule_hook');

Schedules a hook which will be executed by the WordPress actions core on a specific interval, specified by you. The action will trigger when someone visits your WordPress site, if the scheduled time has passed.

So if you want to execute some code on a regular base, like checking an RSS Feed, doing a database backup or reseting database values this function will do it for you. Unfortunatley its not as easy to use as transient but here is a short article on how it is done:

WordPress HTTP API

wp_remote_get( $url, $args = array() );

An easy to use function if you want to retrieve the content of a Webpage. The function stores the result within an easily accessible array. Not only do you get the result content of the webpage, you also get header informations and response codes. This function is also capable of retrieving feed content which also makes it useful if you want to create a twitter plugin or an rss reader with wordpress.

Easily Fetch an RSS Feed with WordPress

$feed = fetch_feed( $uri );

fetch_feed is another simple wordpress method to get feed content. It also has the added benefit that it uses the SimplePie and FeedCache functionality for retrieval and parsing and automatic caching.

A feature to mimic twitter like time display. Instead of outputting the time in a basic format you can display it like this:

WordPress get comments

Sometimes its neccessary to retrieve the comments outside of the comments loop like I did with the Avia Feedback Box Plugin, where comments are displayed via ajax. This function helps you in doing so

WordPress validation of strings

wp_kses($string, $allowed_html, $allowed_protocols);

wp_kses is a very usefull function when it comes to sanitizing untrusted user input. This function makes sure that only the allowed HTML element names, attribute names and attribute values plus only sane HTML entities will occur in $string.

WordPress text transformation

wptexturize()

A text transformation function that converts commonly used strings into the typographical correct signs. Used for dashes, ellipsis etc and will also add typograpic quotes to certain phrases.

The last text transformation tool on the list is used by wordpress to ad <p> tags to a string by replacing double <br/> tags

WordPress Shortcode API

add_shortcode(), do_shortcode()

add_shortcode() is an easy way to create macros for your post content. for example lets say you want to wrap some content inside the post area within a div with some additional classes and ids that allows you to create multiple columns. you could of course just switch to the html editor and enter

Easier and more convenient especially if you are dealing with customers who dont know html would be a shortcode solution within your functions.php file:
